The Interview

• Question: How are you doing these days, Asanka? What has been keeping you busy lately?

I am doing great! These days, my time is mostly split between my demanding professional commitments and my personal fitness goals. I have been spending a lot of extra hours at the gym lately to stay in peak shape.

• Question: How did your journey into the world of glitz and glamour begin?

My official entry into the arts and entertainment industry dates back to 2013, when I started out as a model. I was fortunate enough to acquire my foundational knowledge and formal training under the guidance of Ms. Rozanne Diasz at her renowned modeling academy, which really set my career in motion.

• Question: Could you share some highlights of your work and achievements so far?

Looking back, I’ve been blessed to experience almost every facet of the modeling industry. To date, I have successfully completed over a hundred photoshoots, collaborating with more than 130 professional photographers and an extensive network of makeup artists. It is an ongoing journey that I still thoroughly enjoy.

Beyond being in front of the camera, I have also contributed as a runway coach, training up-and-coming Sri Lankan models. For several years, I have worked as both a trainer and a model for the Singer Designer Fashion Show. I am also a regular face on major Sri Lankan ramps, including high-profile bridal shows.

Furthermore, I have starred in several music videos and recently wrapped up acting for an upcoming feature film. Although I received invitations to star in two television dramas, I unfortunately had to turn them down due to my tight professional schedule. That said, I am incredibly keen to take on more film projects in the future.

• Question: You wear two hats beautifully—as a model and a professional beautician. Tell us about that dual passion.

I truly view this duality as a immense blessing and a divine gift. Becoming a professional beautician is no easy feat; it requires rigorous study and deep technical knowledge. I always say that a professional beautician is second only to a medical doctor in terms of the precision and care required for the job. It demands a lot of continuous learning, which is exactly how I have built my career.

• Question: How long have you been practicing as a professional beautician?

I am currently in my sixth year as a professional beautician. However, my fascination with transformation started much earlier. Even as a kid, I used to experiment with various makeovers and character styling. Looking back at that early curiosity, I realize that my love for this profession was sparked in my childhood.

• Question: What does it feel like to balance your time on the runway with your work as a beautician?

It requires a high level of maturity and clear understanding. Quite often, when I bring a bride I styled myself to a bridal exhibition, the hosts on stage ask me in surprise, “Aren’t you modeling today?” or “Should we introduce you as the beautician or the model today?” It always brings a massive smile to my face and makes me feel genuinely happy inside, knowing I can confidently represent both spheres on the exact same stage.

The beauty industry is incredibly honorable. It gives you the unique privilege of making someone happy and feeling that joy reflect back into your own heart. I firmly believe you cannot make someone else beautiful unless you have beauty in your heart. We must always nurture a beautiful mindset; that is the secret behind creating truly exceptional art.

• Question: What are some of the most memorable experiences you’ve gained from these two industries?

The experiences are countless. These professions have taught me the true value of punctuality and time management. More importantly, they have allowed me to cross paths with people from all walks of life, including some exceptionally kind-hearted individuals.

To give you an example, a young woman once came to me to get styled for her wedding. She told me she had chosen me as her bridal artist long before she even received a marriage proposal! However, due to sudden financial difficulties, she hesitantly opened up to me, saying, “It was my biggest dream to be styled by you, but I am falling short on budget.” Hearing her story, I decided to do her entire bridal makeover completely free of charge. I regularly try to support people in need like that. Even when new faces enter the modeling world, I do my best to guide them and help the most deserving talent find their footing in the industry.

• Question: Tell us a bit about your salon and the specific services you offer.

My salon offers a comprehensive range of beauty and styling services. We specialize in complete bridal makeovers, advanced skincare treatments for various skin concerns, and specialized hair care. What sets us apart is that we are fully equipped to handle both brides and grooms, ensuring everyone looks their absolute best on their special day.

• Question: We heard a rumor that you were recently appointed to a very prestigious civic role. Is that true?

Yes, that is true! I have been appointed as a Justice of the Peace (JP) for the whole island. Additionally, I have taken on the role of President of the Puttalam District Association, where I am actively leading our community initiatives.

• Question: Do you have any plans to pursue acting more seriously?

If the right project comes along with a meaningful script, I will definitely accept it. My primary interest, however, lies in cinema and feature films rather than television.

• Question: What are your visions and goals for the future?

I am currently working on opening a brand-new, state-of-the-art salon. Alongside that, I plan to launch a dedicated modeling academy for aspiring talent, as well as structured professional courses in beauty culture.

On the international front, I am preparing to represent Sri Lanka at an upcoming international bridal styling competition at the Asian level, which is scheduled to be held in Singapore. Furthermore, I am eager to study Ayurvedic beauty culture deeply, as I want to play a part in taking the local beauty industry in a refreshing new direction.

• Question: Before we wrap up, would you like to acknowledge the people who have stood by you?

Absolutely. I want to express my deepest gratitude to my family and my closest friends who have been the backbone of my journey. A massive thank you also goes out to all the incredibly talented photographers I work with, and, of course, to my wonderful fans for their unconditional love and support.

For anyone looking to visit, my current salon is located in Dankotuwa. We are also excited to announce that a second branch will be opening very soon on the Dankotuwa-Negombo Road.
