The one-off Test match between the Indian women’s team and the touring England women’s team commenced on Thursday (Dec 14) at the DY Patil Sports Academy stadium in Mumbai.
India ended the opening day with a total of 410/7 in 94 overs, with four Indian batters achieving half-centuries.
Satheesh Shubha scored 69 runs, whereas Jemimah Rodrigues managed to score 68 runs and Yastika Bhatia reached a score of 66 runs.
On the other hand, Deepti Sharma displayed an impressive unbeaten performance, accumulating a total of 60 runs.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India, could have also achieved a half-century; however, her innings was abruptly ended due to a peculiar run out.
Kaur elegantly directed the ball towards the off-side off the bowling of Charlie Dean. With the intention of scoring a single run, she swiftly initiated her run, but was sent back by her teammate Yastika Bhatia.
Danni Wyatt, who was fielding at the cover, threw the ball at the stumps and successfully struck. Kaur, however, should have reached her ground but displayed a lackadaisical approach, resulting in her bat getting stuck in the surface.
After reviewing the replays, the third umpire made the decision that she was out.
Harmanpreet returned to the dressing room after making a 49 off 81 balls, hitting six fours.
Yastika Bhatia and India skipper formed a partnership of 116 runs for the fifth wicket, marking the second-highest partnership for India in the red-ball format.
This is the first Test that the Indian women’s team is playing after almost two years, and the first women’s Test that is being played on home soil after 9 years.
