Undiagnosed pneumonia clusters reported in China – WHO warns

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that undiagnosed clusters of pneumonia among children in northern China are on the rise.

“It is unclear whether this is related to the overall increases in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities,” the WHO said in a statement.

The World Health Organization added that on November 22, China had requested available clinical information as well as laboratory results regarding this cluster reported among children through the International Health Regulations Mechanism.

The World Health Organization says it is also working with doctors and scientists through existing technology partnerships and networks in China to accurately diagnose the condition.

Since mid-October, northern China has reported an increase in influenza-like illnesses compared to the same period in the past three years.

WHO is seeking this additional information and has recommended that the people of China take necessary measures to reduce the risk of respiratory diseases, including the recommended vaccinations.
